This is Rumah Anthony, Sungai Lingah: an Iban community whose home sits where the river meets the forest, where the day begins with the sound of water and ends with the gathering of families along the ruai.

Reaching Rumah Anthony is not a journey of convenience. From Sibu city, the way in winds through stretches of logging road before giving way to the river itself, where a longboat carries you the rest of the way. It is, in every sense, a place you arrive at with intention.

And for those who do, what waits at the end of that journey is something increasingly rare — a community living closely with its traditions, on its own terms, at its own pace.

The practice of Miring

At the heart of life in Rumah Anthony is Miring — one of the most sacred rituals of the Iban people, and a practice the community has carefully preserved across generations.

Miring is a ceremonial offering: a moment of pause, of reverence, of asking for blessing and protection from the spiritual world. It is performed at the threshold of meaningful moments — when welcoming honoured guests into the longhouse, when blessing a newly built home, and during significant celebrations such as Gawai, the harvest festival.

To witness Miring is to witness something quietly powerful. It is not a performance staged for spectators. It is a ritual lived and breathed by the community, opened generously to those fortunate enough to be present when the moment calls for it.
